Woodhouses Bastle

At Harbottle, the remnants of a Norman castle overlook the valley. The castle was repeatedly attacked and besieged by the Scots and abandoned once and for all in the 17th century with much of the masonry used for other buildings in the village. Alwinton is a meeting of the ways and must have been a much busier place than it is now, especially when the drovers were passing through. On the second Saturday in October the village plays host to a Border Shepherds Show, the last agricultural show of the borders area before winter sets in.
